Green With Envy: Why Reindeer Moss is So Magical
My Rocky Mountain roots have instilled a love of plants, nature, and pure mountain air. So when I have a chance to bring the feeling of nature into my work, it is more than to create beautiful spaces, I am infusing my culture and childhood into a space. Perhaps one of my favorite expressions of nature in interiors are living walls.
Not new at all…living walls have been around since King Nebuchadnezzar built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to help his wife feel more comfortable in her new home (sweet gesture). The King (and now many of my clients) feel the joy plants can provide called biophilia. Additional benefits cannot be ignored - help purify the air and provide natural acoustic. There are many ways to create a living wall. One of my favorites is reindeer moss.
EASY TO CARE FOR
Handpicked from the forests and mountain areas of northern Scandinavia, reindeer moss is not a moss at all, but a lichen that does not require sunlight, watering, or pruning. Easy enough?
When I add to my client’s home, we spend a little time going over how to care for it. This article is easy to follow and great for beginners.
One of the coolest benefits is that reindeer moss has a purifying effect by filtering the air. It also can reduce humidity and airborne dust in the immediate space around itself.
I have used it in the past for sound mitigation where walls and floors magnify machinery and conversational noise like in open offices or spacious lofts. These benefits aside, it is fun to look at!
IT IS PRETTY TOO
Installed in tiles, it can be purchased in various shapes and colors. The colors make it easy to match brands in commercial spaces or align with concepts in homes. The texture is fun to look at and touch too!
WHERE TO INSTALL
A preserved moss panel adds a dynamic focal point to any room, wall, or ceiling. Yes! Try it on the ceiling.
One of my favorite uses for the tiles are in a yoga or meditation room for those of us lucky to have the space for such a sanctuary. This sacred geometric symbol comes premade. Just hang and start your yoga practice!
Another good space is in the basement where natural light and the feeling of the outdoors can feel so far away.
One can order reindeer moss and install themselves, whether it is just a few panels or a whole wall or a shape like the below. Most of all, have fun! And enjoy all that nature continues to bestow upon us for as long as we allow it.
